Green infastructure - light rail
The Sydney Light Rail Inner West Extension is a 5.6 kilometre extension of the Sydney Light Rail system extending from Lilyfield to Dulwich Hill. Darren was part of the successful John Holland Group team, which included AURECON engineers and HBOEMTB , engaged to provide a response to Metro Light Rail’s Request for Tender for the Design and Construction of the Sydney Light Rail Inner West Extension. The project comprised the architectural, urban and landscape design of nine stops; proposed architectural designs for the Pyrmont Maintenance Depot and Stabling Yard; proposed designs for elevators, new pedestrian bridges at Hawthorne Canal and Parramatta Road, shelters, antithrow screens, traffic barriers, retaining walls and stairs. Schedules, palettes and designs for signage, lighting, planting, furniture, materials landscape maintenance and graffiti prevention / removal were provided as part of the detailed design and documentation services.
The outcome of the urban and landscape design was the creation of a ‘line identity’ for the project delivered through the urban design concept, drawing attention to each station along the former freight line which the surrounding land uses, until now, have turned their backs to and hidden away.
The design has optimised the visibility of stations from surrounding streets, reduced walking distances to the platforms and maximised awareness and patronage.
