Masterplanning & Public Domain
The Springwood Town Centre Public Domain Plan proposes the creation of a quality public domain that supports a legible, safe and well connected network of streets and public spaces. This town centre public domain plan incorporates best practice water sensitive urban design sustainability principles and improvements to pedestrian movement corridors.
The plan will help to activate adjacent buildings and public spaces along Macquarie Road through upgrades to existing pedestrian footpaths and road blisters.
Macquarie Road displays many of the characteristics of a typical high street, local traffic, high pedestrian activity and a variety of shops. It is envisaged the residential population of the centre will grow and with it an increase in street life and the night time economy along Macquarie Road. This highlights a need for upgrades to ageing amenities and connections, to ensure the main street remains vibrant.
The predominant strategy proposed for the transformation of Macquarie Road involves the simple act of extending kerbs around existing street blisters to reclaim excess space from the vehicular corridor - creating usable space for public life. This strategy is consistent with traffic calming measures proposed in the Springwood Town Centre Masterplan such as footpath widening, pedestrian crossing accessibility and reducing road width.
