shun fung golf course beijing
recreational landscapes
The landscape for this 27 hole golf course on the scenic outskirts of Beijing was conceptually derived from the theories in which humans perceive the landscape.
The nine holes that play through the foothills of the mountains are based on Prospect-Refuge Theory whereby we we prefer landscapes where we have an outlook but remain hidden from view. Planting for these 9 holes was based on native shrub and tree conifers.
The nine holes playing alongside the lake are based on Savannah Theory - a landscape set in a savannah grasslands where there are scattered trees available to escape from predators.
An existing stone fruit orchard of plums, peaches and apples were retained as the setting for another nine holes based on Biodiversity Theory which posits that humans prefer diverse landscapes as in the garden of Eden. Native wildflowers including Beijing’s ubiquitous flowering weed “Second Moon Orchid” were underplanted under fruit trees in out-of-play areas to increase diversity and encourage birds.
33 Parallel designed and supervised the landscape installation over several seasons, individually siting all trees and shrubs.
