This garden set on the crest of a ridge amongst banana plantations required extensive levelling to make functional garden spaces and to take advantage of the panoramic views to the Pacific Ocean and the Split Solitary Islands. During excavation an enormous quantity of rough basalt rock was unearthed, and the entire garden was then terraced using walls made from this on-site material.
33 Parallel built a large pavillion to resist cyclonic weather and included a built-in pizza oven. The pavillion takes in the view and has facilities for preparing wild caught fish.
Given the scale of the garden, much of the planting was derived from divisions and cuttings of existing plants.
